What is Bail?

After a person has been arrested they are next presented to a judge. At this time the judge will set their bail amount, or the amount of money that can be paid in order for the person to be released from jail until a future court date. Instead of providing the total bail amount at one time, you are able to connect with a bail bond agency in order to post a “bond” which typically comes with a fee of approximately 10% – 15% of the total bail.

What Are You Responsible For?

When a person signs on with a bail bond agency, they become the co-signer of the bond (or the indemnitor). When you post a bond this then acts like a contract, meaning the person and agency will make sure the defendant appears at all their court dates. By co-signing a bond you agree to not only take responsibility for the person’s whereabouts after being released, but you ensure this person is present at any future court dates. If they fail to appear at court then the agency, and ultimately the co-signer of the bond, is then responsible for the full bail amount. A warrant will also be issued for the defendant at this time.
